Types of boiler
The three most common kinds of central heating systems use either conventional, system, or combi boilers. The best boiler for your property will depend on its age, size as well as your lifestyle.
Conventional Boilers
Often found in older homes, conventional boilers require two tanks that are located in the loft. The boiler heats water which is then stored in a cylinder until it is needed. The main advantage of a conventional system is that you can use multiple outlets at the same time without losing temperature or water pressure. The disadvantage of a conventional boiler is that it takes up a lot of space and you cannot have instant hot water. Once the cylinder of hot water has been used up, you have to wait for the boiler to heat up another full tank.
System Boilers
These are similar to a conventional boiler, except that it feeds the hot water cylinder directly from the mains. The advantages are that you can feed multiple outlets simultaneously and water pressure will be stronger. The disadvantages are it still takes up more space than a combi boiler and, like the conventional system, you are limited by the size of your tank.
Combi Boilers
Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains. The advantages are they are compact, energy-efficient, give good water pressure, and supply hot water on demand. The disadvantage is that it’s not so efficient at running more than one outlet at a time.
